When cared properly, cashmere isn't just good for your wardrobe and bank balance, it also helps the overall ecosystem. Reduced waste, lower consumption of detergent and energy, less environmental strain, all contribute to a healthier planet. So with last week being zero waste week lets dive into easy, simple steps to care for your cashmere

Care Guide: Make Your Cashmere Last

Looking for answers to how to wash your pashmina or cashmere clothing? Here are best practices and tips from our care guide to help you wear your cashmere often and keep it looking beautiful.

Step What To Do Why It Helps
1. Read the Label Always check the care label on your piece: washing instructions, fibre composition, any special finishes. Different cashmere weights, blends, or dye-processes might require slightly different handling.
2. Limit Washing Cashmere doesn’t need frequent washing. Often airing it out or spot cleaning is enough. Every wash stresses fibres; fewer washes = less wear, less shrinkage, less impact.
3. Gentle Wash When you do wash: hand washing with cold water and mild detergent (or specific cashmere/wool shampoo). If machine-washing, use a wool/cashmere cycle in a mesh bag. Avoids agitation and heat which cause felting, pilling, and loss of softness.
4. Rinse & Remove Excess Water Gently Don’t wring. Press water out gently. Roll in a towel to soak up moisture. Protects the fibre structure; maintains shape.
5. Dry Flat & Shape While Damp Lay flat on a clean towel, reshape gently; avoid hanging when wet. Avoid direct sun or heat (radiators, etc.). Prevents stretching, distortion, and uneven drying.
6. Pilling & Maintenance Use a cashmere comb or a fabric shaver (designed for fine fabrics) to gently remove pills. Brush with a soft brush occasionally. Keeps the surface smooth and restores appearance without damaging the material.
7. Storage Fold, don’t hang. Store in breathable cotton storage bags or drawers. Use cedar, lavender or moth-deterrents (natural, not chemical sprays). Hanging can stretch; air circulation and natural deterrents protect from pests.
8. Repair and Reuse If seams come loose or depictions, mend early. Use layering (throws over sofas, scarves instead of coats) to extend use cases. Repairing extends lifespan; reusing or repurposing avoids discarding good material.

Wear Wise: Daily Habits for Longevity

  • Rotate your cashmere pieces in regular use so one item is not constantly stressed.

  • Avoid putting heavy bags or straps over cashmere shoulders to prevent abrasion.

  • Keep away from rough surfaces (velcro, coarse knit sweaters) that can snag.

  • When wearing in windy or damp conditions, use a protective outer layer.
